As indicated by his club membership number 105, therefore joining in 1987, Bruce has been a long time MAWA member. For many years Bruce had been an infrequent competitor at MAWA track and field and Sunday events but he has had enormous involvement in athletics. Church attendance often made Sunday morning MAWA events difficult to fit in to his busy schedule.
The value of his service to athletics is shown by Bruce being awarded Life membership of both Athletics WA and Australian Athletics. He was also honoured with an Order of Australia (OAM) in June 2022 for his service to athletics. In recent years he has been a technical manager for Athletics WA. This role involves servicing and suppling of equipment, such as throwing implements, to competition sites in the field and on the track. An extremely important role which requires a lot of time and effort pre competition, during completion and post competition. Bruce spent many hours in the equipment store at WAAS servicing equipment.
Officiating for combined events such as Decathlon, Heptathlon and Pentathlon requires special skills and Bruce officiated in the senior role of combined events referee. He also officiated as a race walk judge.
Bruce did mostly middle distance events and was a very good steeplechase and cross country runner.
Our condolences to Marie and family
